Christopher has also been working hard to write his name neatly - hasn't he done well? |
Welcome to our blog.
We are a bunch of new entrant learners at Wairakei School, Christchurch, New Zealand. We hope you enjoy looking at what we have been up to.

Writing on the line.
We've been working hard at handwriting time by trying our best to sit letters on the line. Look at these fabulous pieces of work!
Interaction
Our focus for Terms 3 and 4 is INTERACTION (our first goal is to pronounce it correctly).
One form of INTERACTION is the reaction or response between a book and its reader...so we are looking at how pop-up books excite their readers. We've looked at a few pop-up books already and we have discovered that some have lift-up parts, moving parts, stand up parts, twisting parts and lots more! We got very excited!
We're going to make a pop-up book eventually, so we are learning about the different types of folds. Today we learnt how to do a 'mouth fold'. Some of it was tricky but we persevered (which means 'keep trying even when it is hard'). Didn't we do well?

MUFTI DAY next Friday 9 August. We will be INTERACTING with Room 5 by sharing a colour for mufti day. Our colour is BLUE...what blue clothes might you wear? Bring a gold coin donation.

Back at School
Well, I'm sure everyone agrees that the holidays went way too quickly!
Today it was Ruby's first day at school! During the holidays she had a PIRATE party to celebrate her 5th birthday - how cool is that? Her lovely mum even made her a pirate skirt (which she brought to school to share for news). Luckily she likes pirates because today her name was drawn out of the box to be First Mate! Here she is with two of her friends.
A big congratulations to Toby and his family too. Toby was very excited to tell everyone that 'his baby had arrived'. Last week Toby's little sister, Coco Amber McKee, was born. Apparently Coco will make an appearance at school soon - can't wait!

Assembly
At Friday's assembly we were lucky to have Olly Bowman come along and perform for us! Olly is NZ's current champion at Soccer Freestyle. He is 22 years old, and taught himself how to freestyle only 3 years ago! He is competing in the World Champs in 2 weeks time. Good luck, Olly!
Here are some (fuzzy) pics...
If you really want to see how talented Olly is - have a look at these videos.
Some clever children from Room 10 shared their very own limericks too.

Jump Rope for Heart
Today Otakaro had their Jump Rope for Heart...what fun!
We had a go at skipping forwards, backwards, in circles, criss-cross, with a long rope, with a partner, with hoops and even with just our feet!
A big thank you to parents for helping their child fundraise too! At our last count we had $1372...awesome! I'm sure The Heart Foundation will be very pleased.
It was Absolutely Brilliant to see lots of parents and family at the event. I know everyone in Room 12 had the time of their life!

Our Pirate Ships
This term we have been learning about how pirates sustain themselves. We know that pirates needed to sustain themselves by stealing treasure and pirate ships.
We made our own pirate ships! Have a look at them. Can you see some ship parts? You might see a plank, sail, hull, crows nest, mast, flag and a rudder.

Flowers!
We discovered that our poem of the week had two words beginning with fl...plus some reading groups had books with fl words in them too. So we made flowers . . . why do you think we made flowers?
Other words we came up with were: fluff, fluffy, flap, flat, fly, flood, float, flip and flu! Can you think of any more?
And look who was in the paper today . . . can you spot Toby?
